What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations. It brings together men of good character who seek to improve themselves, support charitable causes, and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals.

At its heart, Freemasonry is about:

It uses ceremony and symbolism to teach moral lessons, but it is not a religion, nor does it replace one.

How do I join?

The traditional phrase is: “To be one, ask one.”

This simply means that if you are interested, the first step is to speak to a Freemason or contact a local Lodge.

From there:

1. You’ll have an informal chat to learn more
2. You may be invited to meet members of the Lodge
3. If you wish to proceed, you can submit an application

Freemasonry is open to men over 18 who are of good character and genuine interest.

Is it expensive?

Freemasonry is not intended to be exclusive or unaffordable, but there are some costs involved.

These typically include:

• A joining fee (one-off)

We aim to keep costs reasonable and transparent, and we are always happy to discuss them openly before you join.

What do I bring to Lodge?

Besides yourself — and hopefully a little money for charity and a drink at the bar — all that is required is:

• The proper dress code
• A positive attitude and willingness to take part
• A safe way to get home after the evening

Everything else will be explained and guided by the members of the Lodge. You won’t be expected to know anything in advance.

What happens at a Lodge meeting?

A typical Lodge meeting includes:

• A formal ceremony (which may involve welcoming new members or progressing existing ones)
• Administrative business
• Time for socialising afterwards, usually over a meal

The atmosphere is a balance of tradition and friendliness — formal in structure, but relaxed and welcoming in spirit.

Do I have to believe in God?

Yes — Freemasonry requires members to have a belief in a Supreme Being.

However, it is not tied to any one religion, and members come from many different faiths and backgrounds. Religion and politics are not discussed in Lodge, ensuring harmony among members.

Is Freemasonry secret?

Freemasonry isn’t really a “secret society”, but rather a society with secrets.

• Our values, principles, and charitable work are open
• Some ceremonial elements are kept private to preserve their meaning

There is nothing in Freemasonry that conflicts with law, family, or personal beliefs.

What time commitment is involved?

Freemasonry is designed to fit around your life, not take it over.

Most Lodges meet:

• Around 7–9 times per year
• With optional social events throughout the year

You can be as involved as your time allows.

Can I visit before joining?

Yes — in many cases, you can meet members informally before making any commitment.
